Steal This Look! The Design Stylings of Suzy Hoodless.

05cam

London superstar Suzy Hoodless is rising fast among the design elite - as you can see by these pics - for good reason! Her fearless use of recycled finds, clean lines and local sourcing of materials makes her someone we can feel good about emulating! I scoured her site for inspiration that I can bring into my own home without paying her hefty (ahem..clearly, deserved) price!

For only a couple hundred bucks you can turn your precious photos into museum worthy attractions. There are a ton of spots on the web that do it - I like Artisico.

Happy Monday!

Wallofinspiration

Happy Monday! Isn't great to start off the week with a little bit of artistic inspiration? The uber-creative home of artist Hilary Pfeifer is certainly a great place to start! Owner of the Portland-based store Bunny With a Tool Belt, her remarkably inventive uses of recycled and found materials lend such personality in her work and in her home! Knowing we're all voyeurs at heart she has generously agreed to walk Design^Sprout readers through her home.

"I use a ton of found objects in my work  (above) and alter them until you don't recognize the original form as  easily.  They come from thrift stores and some of Portland's great  reused art supply and building materials stores, which I scour on a  regular basis."

Newyorkerwall

"I saved covers from the New Yorker Magazine for a  few years to get enough to
paper a wall in my foyer.  It was inspired  by my grandmother's farmhouse, where
covers from the Saturday Evening  Post were decoupaged onto a cabinet in the
bathroom.  I put a few  layers of varathane on top and then hooks so I can hang
wet raincoats  and my cloth shopping bags near the door and out of the living room."

Hifrontdoor

"This is the stained glass window I designed and had  made for my front door.
I chose various pieces of glass from the  scrap bin at a local glass shop, all
with white, and a simple  helvetica-esque font for the lettering."

Livingroom

"An ikea bookshelf lets me alternate square cubbies  of books with some of my
favorite art objects."

Kitchennook

"A sitting area off the kitchen.  We are planning on  finding a great breakfast
table for this space, but right now I love  having this couch here because the
light is fantastic!"

Danielsadlerhouse

"One of many lights I own by artist/friend  Daniel Sadler.  A year or so before his
death, he started this series  of houses where he took photographs of actual
buildings and  transfered them to paper lamps.  He told me that this one was taken
of various walls of a children's music school in New Orleans.  He  loved this building
so much that he returned the next day to take  more pictures and the building was
completely demolished!!"

Fridge

"There are a billion cupboards in  this room, so I decided to paint the walls a
pale greenish yellow,  and then randomly choose others to paint brown, kind of
like a  Mondrian painting.  The fridge is covered with a series of cards I
made last year when I turned 40 and decided to list 40 things I'd
always wanted to do in the hopes that I'd tick down the list before I
turn 50!"

Gethypnotized_2 Milkacow

"A detail of two of the cards, which I made with  some of the clippings from my
massive magazine image database I've  been compiling for the past two decades."

Recordquilt

"Here's the only shot of the dining room I'll  release right now!  It's a quilt I made
years ago from my family's  huge record collection.  I don't have a turntable and
was in the  middle of a transitional year, so I decided to use the Log Cabin
pattern to show a series of labels that trace my musical influences,
from my grandfather's 78's through my mother's albums like Bob Dylan
and Carole King, to my 45s like Rick James' Funkytown and Elvis
Costello."

Glowindarkbathroom

"The downstairs bathroom is quite small and  so I decided to paint it electric
colors and keep my collection of  glow-in-the-dark things there.  It's fun at night,
when the  blacklight does its magic!"

Glowindarkelephant

"One of my favorite glow treasures--an  elephant ornament from the 1950's,
which is early glow plastic  technology."

Hpart

"This box holds a lot of smaller objects, waiting for  their second life!  Here's one of the pieces I have already completed for the  September show--a shiva-like plant with unusual blossoms at the tips."

The Resurrection of Chic

Picture_2

To me, one of life's greatest joys is waking up early, grabbing a latte and looking for that diamond in the rough. Still, there are flea market staples I see all the time that no one seems to be able to find a use for -  racks of holey, leather jackets well-past their prime, mismatched silverware, discarded drawers with no home - the list goes on...   The ladies at Wis Design in Stockholm tackled just such a problem - the result being one of the most whimsical collections I've seen in awhile.
The Decades chest of drawers (above) is made entirely from rescued one-off drawers they gave a new home to.
Vanity1
Made entirely from unwearable leather jackets this modern chair gets a touch of craft With the simple addition of this beautiful, scalloped leather trim this plain white chair become somewhat of an art piece. Gorgeous!

Thejewellerylamp

Even that old jewelry you don't ever seem to wear becomes instantly chic when adorning this stylish metal lamp, no?

Office1

Just as the mid-week blahs were setting in I get an e-mail from Etsy seller and artist Miss Crowland.  In addition to sharing her new and super funky (check it out here!) silhouette art, she sent along some photos of her handmade, totally boho and pretty green Toronto apartment. I am seriously loving the bright colors and organization of her office bookshelves. Blahs now officially gone - thanks Maria!

"The ever-ubiquitous 'keep calm' poster (above), from SF Girl by the Bay on Etsy. The message kept me going while I had a pretty rough first 5 months this year."

Livingroom5 Office2

"I stole the dancing couple from a display shelf at Starbucks (they were too cute), and the monkey is a card my friend sent me from British Columbia. It's a painting from Emily Carr of her pet monkey. The doll is handmade from Mexico. My trusty reference books."

Livingroom3

"That mustard chair is a really old hand-me-down from my uncle. It was in his 'sitting room', that room almost all Italians have that exists, but no one ever uses, for some weird reason. The print with the blue shapes I found for free from a CD store to promote some event long-passed...it's silk screened, and I love it. The item to it's right is a hand-painted hanging from the middle east (CNE), and it has little doors on the front that open up to reveal a little mirror. The little pillow on the chair has a hand painted figure from India (from a little shop in Toronto)."

Livingroom4

"My dad as a young man, and a picture of my brother (I have 4 brothers) that I drew on as a child."

Livingroom1

"I bought the wood cage on the shelf at the CNE in Toronto (Canadian National Exhibition), and it is handmade from Indonesia. I traded one of my drawings for the print hanging below it (silk screened) when I was in an art fair about 1000 years ago. The wood shoe form is from my dad (he is a shoemaker/cobbler). His shoe repair shop is attached to the front of my house that I grew up in, and he's still there (you would probably love his shop too..he has all kinds of crazy stuff in there). The vase I bought at a great store in Toronto called Cindiloohoo. They sell used furniture/accessories that they pick up at estate sales. The vase is actually from an old light fixture (turned upside-down). The doily under it is about 1 of 1000 that my mother has at home, that various relatives have made. My budgie Kiwi was handmade from another budgie."

Livingroom2

"That painting is one of my own. I've had it forever...I don't think I could ever part with it now."

Bedroom1

"The fabric over the bed was hand-embroidered, and I bought that in Mexico. It's from the Ixtapa region (I think that's how it is spelled). I also made the little fuschia tissue flowers, and stuck them to the little branch I grabbed from outside. Oh, and the little cross hanging on the branch is made by hand entirely out of vanilla pods (my friend brought me that from Mexico as well)."

Bedroom2

"I painted the fuschia chair that I found left outside to use as a cute TV stand, and the rug is from India (purchased in a shop in downtown Toronto)...I think it is handwoven, and it is made entirely from plastic...you can use it outdoors too, and I like that it is easy to clean."

This is not your grandma's wallpaper!

Picture_15

Don't these clever designs make you want to run home and paper a wall or two? Artist Natalie Wright hand silk-screens and then paints over the clever patterns she's dreamed up. The mustache design (below) has been snatched up and is currently in production by the WIlly Wonka of wallpaper, Flavor Paper. That's it! I'm gonna need to get some more walls.
